JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi could be poised to eliminate its $5 annual vehicle inspection sticker.

The House voted 112-7 Thursday to approve the final version of a bill to wipe out the sticker.

It was not immediately clear whether Republican Gov. Phil Bryant would sign House Bill 982. If he does, the sticker requirement would end July 1.

During the annual inspection, a driver must show that a vehicle’s headlights, turn signals, horn and windshield wipers are working.

House Transportation Committee Chairman Robert Johnson III, a Democrat from Natchez, says there’s not enough support in the Legislature to create a more thorough and expensive inspection process, so it makes sense to eliminate the sticker.

Vehicles with tinted windows will still need to get a one-time inspection.
