Lawsuit Seeks Delay In Montgomery/Winona Consolidation

MONTGOMERY COUNTY (WCBI) – Two parents and the Montgomery County School board are trying to delay the administrative consolidation of their district and the Winona City Schools.

A request for a temporary restraining order has been filed claiming the county is being shut out of any decisions including the naming of a new superintendent . The complaint says the current Winona school board is holding meetings acting as the governing body of the consolidated district. The federal lawsuit says that group is already advertising for a new school chief and intends to hire one in the next month. That is due in part in the way the consolidation bill was written. The law says the current Winona board will be the governing body from July 1, 2018 until the county can elect its board members next November.  The request for the restraining order says that format denies Montgomery County school district residents their constitutional rights to be represented. A federal judge is being asked to order any meetings be stopped and any decisions be placed on hold until an equal board is established.
