Local leasing office provides safety tips for students before going home

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – As the fall semester wraps up for college campuses, some students are traveling back home for the holidays. This means that apartments will be unused. Helix’s marketing and leasing manager Audreana Higgins said if you are leaving your apartment, you should take a few minutes to care for your unit.

“We just want to make sure that y’all turn off the heaters, unplug anything that you are not using, and set your thermostat on a temp while you are gone from home and that will help you save on your utility bill,” said Higgins.

Higgins has seen the results of people not unplugging unused utilities.

“I just recently saw a torched blanket where it caught fire and they probably panicked and threw that comforter on that fire or the cover was too close to the heater and it caught fire, so it was very badly torched,” said Higgins.

It’s also smart to protect your valuables before leaving on Christmas break.

“For security purposes, make sure you lock your car, your doors, your bedrooms, and don’t leave wallets, keys, backpacks, or anything that looks interesting that would make someone want to break into your car,” said Higgins.

Helix Tenant Dorian Howard has a plan and some advice for his new neighbors.

“Please lock your doors, if someone sees something that you have and they want it, they will take anything that you got,” said Howard.
