A Local Sorority Raises Awareness Of Mental Health

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is working to increase mental health awareness in the African American Community.

Saturday morning at the Hampton inn, the Columbus Alumnae Chapter held a round table discussion on mental health issues. Guests speakers shared when and how to get help in dealing with a mental illness.

In 2015 AKA teamed up with the national alliance on mental health issues. Their goal is to erase the stigma and shame in the African American Community with it comes to mental health.

“African Americans are ashamed about having a mental illness but its nothing to be ashamed about. we are just raising awareness passing out pamphlets and information
on when and where to seek treatment,” said Chapter President Lashanda Randle.

One of Saturday’s speakers was former Columbus school board president and mental health counselor Tommy Prude.
