Video: Local Teacher Passes Away

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Heritage Elementary School is mourning the loss of a beloved teacher.

Martha Claire Fitzner died last night after a short illness.

Fitzner taught the first grade at Heritage for almost 20 years.

Heritage Elementary Principal Cindy Wamble remembers her friend and colleague

“She was just the lifeblood of our school, she was the heartbeat. She meant so much to our school and to our children here. And she’s touched so many lives from first grade all the way up, she’s taught here for over 28 years and she will be greatly missed mainly because of her love for these children and the joy that she brought every day to our school.”

Fitzner was recently named in a Columbus Dispatch poll as “best teacher” in the Golden Triangle.
