Local Volunteers Get Serious Spring Cleaning Done
ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – With the Pilgrimage just a week away, the city of Aberdeen prepares to roll out the red carpet with a citywide cleanup day.
“The goal of this would eventually be to rid Aberdeen of litter all together,”said event organizer Linda Recorod.
It was an early start to a Saturday morning but it didn’t stop community volunteers from picking up, the city of Aberdeen.
“We always talk about they need to do something and you have to wonder who is they. They is we, if we’re not willing to do our part then I think we have no reason to complain. It’s a beautiful day and it’s a great day to feel good about doing something for your community,” said community volunteer Barbara Rowe.
Saturday, volunteers could be seen throughout the area cleaning up yards, neighborhoods, and frequently visited parts of town.
Recorod says she hopes the cleanup crews are encouraging the rest of the community to join in the battle against litter bugs.
“The efforts is for people to see us out here and just care. We can’t stop people from throwing out their stuff. It’s going to have to start with the heart. It’s a decision, do we care or don’t we care,”said Recorod.
Several businesses, organizations and companies participated in saturday’s clean up.
“There are a lot of people behind this getting it together and organizing it and donations to help get this thing going so we’re just honored and privileged to have that every time we do it we get more involvement,” said Recorod.
Including Lann Hardware, The Monroe County Chamber of Commerce, Allmond’s Printing, Save Aberdeen Landmarks, Aberdeen Main Street and the Visitors Bureau and that’s just to name a few.
Recorod says what better time to start spring cleaning than before the city fills with visitors from all over the country.
“We are getting ready for the pilgrimage and we do want our town to look nice we have plenty of people who take the carriage ride that goes very slow through town they are able to observe and look at everything and that makes a difference where they could see a place that is clean. They will go oh these people care and we just want the town to look for that because it’s so important,” said Recorod.
“When you go to another city out of town and you see litter everywhere you immediately form an opinion about that community and so it’s important to us to put our best foot forward,” said Rowe.
Aberdeen’s Pilgrimage weekend kicks off April 6th.
