Lowndes County To Receive a General Funding Boost

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County looks to add a little spending money to their general fund.

Right now, the Lowndes County Tax Assessor’s Office collects taxes for both the city and county, regarding property taxes and car tags.

The office used to get a 5% cut of all car tag proceeds, but in 2008 that cut was brought to 2%.

Now, the office is upping it back to five.

This is not a tax increase; it’s an increase in the fee the county office gets for collecting the taxes.

“What we’re doing right now is gradually getting it back to where it was in 2008, back to the 5%. What we’re going to do for 18, 19 is leave it at 2%, going to 3% the next year, 4% the next year, and 5% the next year,” said Lowndes County Tax Assessor Greg Andrews.

The raised percent will bring $80,000 to the county’s general fund.
