Lowndes Promises Work on Dilapidated Crawford Center

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — An old building that has become a haven for drugs and the homeless is a step closer to being torn down.

Lowndes County supervisors allocated $37,000 to remove asbestos from the old Crawford Community Center. The building was replaced last year with a new community center.

Since then, windows have been broken and doors smashed as efforts to secure it have failed. Supervisor Jeff Smith is pushing to have the county level the building tp eliminate blight in one of Northeast Mississippi’s poorest communities.

A new fire station could be built on the site to provide more services for volunteer firefighters. But the asbestos removal is the first step.
