COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – After two special meetings of the Columbus School Board meeting tonight, there are two new people in charge.  The Columbus School Board voted to remove President Carrie Fisher but first, they named an interim superintendent. Edna Mcgill will step into the position, and after Thursday night’s discussion could be slated to take the superintendent spot permanently. Mcgill has a long history with the Columbus School District, including her work as the co-coordinator of common core curriculum within Columbus Middle School. The board voted three to two with Jason Spears, Glen Lautzenheiser, and Aubra Turner in her favor. Mcgill says she is looking forward to this opportunity.

“I’m very excited to have an opportunity to serve the district there are many exciting things going on in the world of education and i am very happy to be a part of it as permanent superintendent. i hope that i can provide leadership,” said Mcgill.

Mcgill was not present for the first half of tonight’s meeting, so the board decided that items on the agenda needing a superintendent’s approval would be tabled until the next meeting. As for former Superintendent Dr. Martha Liddell, action was taken to formally relieve her of all duties and access to Columbus School District premises. Currie Fisher signed the letter of termination. And then the other shoe fell. School Board Vice President Jason Spears called a secondary special meeting 15 minutes later. At that meeting school board president Currie Fisher was removed from her position, moving Jason Spears into the president’s spot. The motion was approved with a vote of three to one with Angela Verdell opposed. Currie Fisher was not present at this meeting. And as of now it’s still unclear who will fill the open vice president position on the board.
