Man pleads guilty to assault and arson involving his mother

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- A startling confession from a Lowndes County man.

Prosecutors say Travis Weatherspoon, 37, admitted to assaulting his own mother and setting her home on fire.

Weatherspoon made the plea Thursday in Circuit Court. The assault and arson happened back in March of 2018.

Investigators said Weatherspoon hit and kicked the victim, after demanding money. She was able to escape her home and call 911.

Shortly after deputies arrived, the victims home was set on fire. Weatherspoon was sentenced to a decade in prison.
