TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Drivers and equipment operators with the Mississippi Department of Transportation were able to show off their skills and their safety measures during a special “Roadeo.”

One hundred and two employees took part in the annual “MDOT Roadeo” at the District One offices in Tupelo.

Participants were put through challenges , such as maneuvering a golf ball into a cylinder, using a backhoe.

Organizers say the drivers and equipment operators always put safety first.

“They’re a few feet away from traffic on their job daily and by teaching these skills, letting them hone their skills and watching others compete against them, they can learn from co workers about how to operate the equipment safer,” said MDOT Employee Matt Dunn.

District One covers sixteen counties. Top drivers in this competition advance to state this summer.
