MDOT Plans Road Work in Union, Tippah Counties

UNION COUNTY, Miss. —  The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) would like to inform the public of an upcoming chip seal operation that will take place along two routes in District One.

MDOT crews will begin chip seal pavement preservation operations on Highway 349 in Union County and Highway 370 from Highway 15 in Tippah County to the Benton County line on Thursday, May 21. During the operation motorist are strongly encouraged to pay close attention to all signs, workers and equipment.  Motorist should be prepared for delays and intermittent stops. Flagmen will be on site to direct traffic. MDOT encourages motorist to seek alternate routes during this operation.

The public is encouraged to reduce speed to 35 mph within the project limits and to proceed with extreme caution as loose material may be present in the roadway during this operation and for a few days following it.  After the application is complete the roadway will be swept to remove loose material and lane lines will be painted.

Chip sealing is a proactive approach placed on the existing pavement and is designed to seal cracks to minimize moisture penetrating through the existing surface; this extends pavement life and is cost-effective approach to keep a good condition and structurally sound. Every dollar spent on preventative maintenance now, can save up to ten dollars in the future in rehabilitation costs.

MDOT urges motorist to slow down when approaching the work zone and be aware of loose material on the roadway.
