MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Some Aberdeen and Monroe County youth are spending quality time with law enforcement personnel at the Monroe County Detention Center this week.

The Monroe County Detention Center becomes the ideal place for classes on investigation and crime scene analysis. Young people are getting a sneak peak, a bird’s eye view, if you will, on what it takes to catch a criminal.

“We give them a tour of the jail, showing them how, you know handcuffs, shackles, show them the cells. Showing the different things that, what happens when you come to jail. How you are booked in,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, Monroe County.

“We were learning how people be going to jail, how they be getting shackled up and stuff. And you don’t want to come to this place because, when you come there is nothing to do but read books, watch TV, and just look out the window,” said Antonio Moore, Summer Camper.

The junior campers get to meet people from all areas of law enforcement, like narcotics and FBI agents. The youngsters learn from veteran law enforcement personnel.

“When you are doing investigations you’re basically gathering and trying to find out just what went on at that particular call.”

“If they don’t do it, it would be a lot of crime and if its a lot of crime people start moving out,” said Moore.

For some of the campers its just one intense week to be mentored, while for others… it could be the start of a career in law enforcement.

“I think I would because I’d like to do all the stuff that they do and all the gears and help the county and the city and all the states,” said Swan.

“When they see this they, it’s a real eye opener for them,” said Cantrell.

Those youth will be graduating from that intense week of law enforcement training on Friday morning at ten o’clock.”
