COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a weekend wreck in Lowndes County involving a Columbus police officer.

Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton tells WCBI the wreck happened early Sunday morning, while Officer Terri Songer was on her way to work.

Carleton says Songer hit a building off Highway 69 at Hughes Road, totaling her patrol car.

Songer got checked out at the hospital, and is already back at work.

Carleton says the investigation is still preliminary, and he doesn’t know how it will impact her job.

“Of course we’re investigating it because of it being so far off the road, and actually hitting a building,” Carleton said. “We want to know what’s going on a little more in depth, so until we finish the investigation, we won’t know.”

Carleton says Songer has been with the department for about 20 years.
