Middle school students compete in regional science bowl

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Some of the state’s brightest young minds spent the day at The Mississippi University for Women, as they hosted the Mississippi Regional Middle School Science Bowl.

Sixth through eighth graders from across the state spent the day answering questions, competing for the opportunity to go to a national competition in DC.

This was Keerthin Karthikeyan’s second time at the event.

The Oxford eighth grader said he really excels in math and science, and wants to be a pediatrician when he grows up.

He said he most recently won his county’s spelling bee, but what brings him the most joy is making his parents proud.

“Every person, even if sometimes they don’t feel like it, they always want to make their parents proud because they have done so much for us. You always want to repay them back, as much as you can,” Karthikeyan said.

An event representative said the students from Tupelo were the winners. They’ll head to D.C. in April.
