Mississippi Driver’s License Glitch Gets Solution

JACKSON, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – The Department of Public Safety is under-going the most aggressive overhaul of the Mississippi’s driver’s license system in agency history. As the upgrade progresses, a glitch in the system was discovered, which would not allow early license renewal via the Internet or kiosks. As a result, some motorists received a license that was valid for less than the intended four years.

To resolve the issue, individuals who have gotten the incorrect license will receive a letter with instructions on how to get a licenses that will be good for the full four year term.

The modernization of the driver’s license system began nearly five years ago and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Individuals who visit the driver’s license stations around the state will see reduced wait times and increased operating efficiency once the project is completely operational. The new driver’s licenses and identification cards will have enhanced safety features that will better protect important personal information.

“The objective of the system upgrades is better customer service,” said Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz. “We have developed a solution to satisfy the issue with the incorrect licenses and are working on a long-term resolution of the software glitch.”

 Until the long-term software solution has been implemented, motorists who want to renew on the Internet or at a kiosk should do so on their actual birth date.

“We are committed to making lasting improvements to our driver’s license system,” said Driver Service Bureau Director Major Kenneth Brown. “We will continue to work diligently to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce wait times in all 51 stations around the state.”
