MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — In 2014 Mississippi has the 3rd highest number of adults considered obese, the study is based on the behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

“It’s a telephone survey, where they call people randomly, and they ask for height and weight among other questions,” says Nutrition Specialist Brent Fountain.

From there, your Body Mass Index is calculated. A BMI that’s 25 to 29 puts you in the overweight category 30 and over , you are listed as obese.

” Make changes that you can live with for a lifetime. You don’t need to go on any extreme type diet,” says Fountain.

Personal Trainer Tom Campbell says some simple steps can make a big difference.

“If you are at an office desk, during the day time, when you answer the phones stand up, take the stairs instead of the elevator, do calf raises while you brush your teeth,” he says.

and Fountain adds it’s all about having a plan.

” It’s 5 o’clock, I have to have something to feed the family, let’s find the easiest quickest option, which may or may not be the healthiest option.”

If you’re still not sure if getting fit is for you, Campbell has some advice.

” 1 thing is for sure, you’re not going to get any results staying in the same place.”

He says getting active as little as 30 mins a day , 3 times is all you need to drop some Lb’s and live a healthier life.

Fountain says he believes strong health education plans is key to keeping Mississippi of the top of the most obese list.
