UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-Mississippi joins other states across the nation in proposing plans to make schools safer. Friday (1-11-13), LT.. Gov. Tate Reeves presented two proposals he believes will make students safer in their schools and ease any tensions and fears parents might have. The first plan is to provide up to $10,000 dollars for schools to hire certified law enforcement officers. The remaining money to pay the salary would come for the local community. He also wants make sure people with a history of mental illness can not purchase firearms. Reeves says Mississippi Courts should be required to report findings of mental incompetence to the FBI’S background check system. The initiatives were in response to the December 14th shootings at an elementary school in Newtown,Connecticut that left 20 children and six adults dead.
