JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — A group of Mississippi residents is fighting to have the confederate emblem removed from the state flag.

Supporters gathered enough signatures to get Mississippi Initiative Number 55 on the ballot, and Attorney General Jim Hood approved the signatures, Thursday.

55 is a state ballot initiative to amend the state constitution and remove the confederate battle emblem from the Mississippi state flag.

Sponsor Sharon Brown released a statement, saying “We are one important step closer to giving the citizens of Mississippi the opportunity to have their voice heard on this important issue.”

Brown says the group will announce their next steps on October 9.
