Mississippi Supreme Court voids Initiative 65

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi Supreme Court extinguishes a medical marijuana initiative.

Today, six justices rule Initiative 65 is void because the state’s initiative process has not been updated.

Mississippi voters overwhelmingly approved the measure last fall.

However, lawyers for Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler successfully argued the state’s constitution requires signatures from five congressional districts.

Mississippi only has four congressional districts.

The state constitution was not updated after Mississippi lost a congressional seat following the 2000 Census.

Mississippi Today is reporting there are six pending ballot initiatives that could be impacted by this ruling and two other initiatives voters have already approved.

Those are voter ID and limiting eminent domain powers.
