Monroe County bridge temporarily closing

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A busy Monroe County bridge has been shut down.

Now, some drivers could face a 25 mile detour.

County supervisors were ordered to temporarily close the Buttahatchee River bridge.

That popular swimming spot is on Bartahatchie Road, just northeast of Hamilton.

The Federal Highway Administration and the Office of State Aid Road and Bridge deemed the closure necessary.

County Road Manager Sonny Clay said three steel pilings, under the bridge, need work.

The bridge was inspected at least six months ago but the notice was delivered Monday.

Clay said the county will have to hire someone to make the repairs.

No completion date has been set.
