Monroe County Electric Scam

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Many in the Monroe County Electric Power Association service area have reported a scam involving company impersonators.

Monroe County E.P.A. has been notified by several customers that the scammers are masking their number with the power association’s, so it looks exactly the same.

The message claims to be collecting past due utility bills and prompts the person to pay their bill immediately purchasing a ‘Green Dot MoneyPak card’ at a local retail store.’

Then, the caller is directed to scratch off and read the MoneyPak card’s serial number.

The scammer states that the customer will have their services disconnected unless the above steps are completed.

Monroe County Electric advises no one to pay their bill by issue of this phone call or through the methods suggested.

Here are some tips provided by the Monroe County Electric Power Association on how to avoid the scam.

  1. If you are suspicious of a caller, hang up and call your local power company.
  2. Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who calls you.
  3. Never wire money, provide debit or credit card numbers or Green Dot MoneyPak card numbers to someone you don’t know.
  4. Your local power company will not contact you demanding immediate payment by MoneyPak.
  1. If your local power company’s name and number shows up on your caller ID, that does not necessarily mean that is them.
