MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is in a budget crunch.

Sheriff Cecil Cantrell tells WCBI they had to make several cuts to work under the perimeters given to them by the Board of Supervisors.

Because of the cuts, the department had to lay off four employees. In addition, they’re also cutting back approximately 10 cars a day.

“We’re going to be taking cars off the road at a time where I don’t think we need to be taking cars off the road. Matter of fact, I think we should be adding cars to the road, but we can’t buy gas for these cars and keep up with our budget and where it needs to be . I think it’s a bad thing, but, i’m going to make these cuts to stay within our budget perimeters. I think it’s wrong, but at the same time, it’s something that we’ve got to do,” said Sheriff Cantrell.

Sheriff Cantrell wants to reassure people that the department will still run effectively despite the cuts.

In the mean time, the thieving continues on my mother’s Estate property in Amory. A $1100. lawn mower is missing, but could be recovered 2 doors down at the residence owned by the man that took a $4168. shed from the same property. When will these felony thefts be abated? The City of Amory Police Chief knows about them, where the lawn mower has turned up had a same model taken from the same property about 3 or 4 years ago, but returned by a police escort. They know this theft is going on, but the police just go ahead and let it happen over and over. I am tired of their aiding and abetting criminals and criminal activity.
