WINONA (WCBI) – A Montgomery County Justice court judge must face a public reprimand and pay $5,381.34 in fines and fees for judicial misconduct.
The Mississippi Supreme Court Thursday rules the Judge Keith Stokes Roberts violated judicial ethics while handling a back rent case. The Commission of Judicial Performance says Roberts overstepped his authority when he told a landlord seeking back rent they should ask for the court limit of $3,500 rather than the actual damages. The court says Roberts was also wrong in not notifying the defendant of a new court date and the new claim amount. Roberts awarded the plaintiff in the case a default judgement when the defendant failed to appear for the court date she did not know had been set.
