MS Supreme Court Clarifies PSC Domestic Violence Waiver Program

JACKSON (WCBI) – A ruling by the Mississippi Supreme Court clears the way for some utilities to begin waiving deposits for victims of domestic violence.   The Court ruled that members of the Mississippi Rural Water Associations did not have to offer the deposit waiver because the rule infringed on their abilities to independently set rates.   The decision does now allow the PSC to require investor owned utilities like Atmos and Mississippi Power along with electric power associations to give the option to documented domestic violence victims.   The idea comes becomes many abuse victims cannot leave their homes because the costs of getting electric and water service in a new residence is too high.   The rule does not forgive the deposits but allows up to 60 days to have it one file
