MSDH is reporting over 2,500 new COVID-19 cases to kick of 2021

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi is ringing in the new year with more than 2,500 new COVID-19 cases.

The state department of health is reporting 2,575 new cases and 29 new deaths.

Right now, nine percent of the people that test positive in the state are hospitalized. That’s according to state health officials.

The health department’s website reports 64 open ICU beds across the state.

Locally, Lee County is reporting 90 new cases today.

Lowndes has 64, Union has 56, Monroe has 54, Oktibbeha has 44, and Itawamba has 43.

Based on population and positive test results, Webster, Union, Calhoun, Lowndes, and Pontotoc Counties rank in the top ten in the state.

Today, Noxubee County had its highest one day total for new cases with 27.

Other counties with smaller populations but higher totals today: WEBSTER: 29, NOXUBEE 27, WINSTON: 20, CLAY: 20, YALOBUSHA: 19 – PICKENS CO. AL: 22
