MUW Hires First Coach For Return To Athletics

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Athletics at Mississippi University for Women has announced the hiring of Roxanne Hernandez as head women’s volleyball coach in The W’s return to collegiate athletics.

“This is an exciting day for The W as we welcome Roxanne as our head women’s volleyball coach. Her experience at the NCAA and club levels, both as a student-athlete and coach, will be a tremendous asset as we begin to build the volleyball program.  I am excited for this new chapter of W Athletics to begin,” said Jason Trufant, director of athletics.

 

Hernandez head coached for The Island Volleyball Academy prior to joining athletics at The W. During her time at the academy, she qualified and competed in the 2016 Girls’ National Championship. In the summer of 2016, she joined LIU Post University as assistant volleyball coach. At Dowling College, Hernandez served as graduate assistant and advanced to championship play and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the 2015 season. Both Dowling and LIU Post compete in the East Coast Conference of the NCAA Division II.

 

“I am beyond excited for the opportunity to head the women’s volleyball team. I would like to thank Jason and The W for the chance to build this program from the ground up, and I look forward to carrying on the rich tradition of The W through the reinstatement of athletics,” said Hernandez.

 

Hernandez is a graduate of Canisius College with a bachelor of arts in communication studies. At the division I college, she was voted All-Tournament Team at the 2012 University of Buffalo Invitational, ranked third throughout The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in blocks per set during senior season and served as captain of the volleyball team.
