MUW Named “Best Bang For The Buck” By Washington Monthly

COLUMBUS, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – In addition to being ranked for the fifth year in a row by Washington Monthly as a top master’s university, Mississippi University for Women also was named a Best Bang for the Buck.

At No. 36, it is the first time the university has been ranked in the Best Bang for the Buck category. The W is the highest ranked public Mississippi university on the list. It is the fifth consecutive year that The W has been ranked as a top 100 master’s university.

“For the past four years, we’ve ranked America’s colleges and universities based on their `Bang for the Buck’—that is, the extent to which they charge students who aren’t rich a reasonable price for quality education that will advance them in their careers,” according to Washington Monthly.

“This is a remarkable recognition for The W,” said MUW President Jim Borsig. “I’m delighted to see our student’s accomplishments, along with the good work of our faculty and staff recognized nationally.”

Different from other ranking publications, Washington Monthly asks, what colleges are doing for their country.

Schools are ranked based on their contribution to the public good in three categories, including social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs) and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

During the first week of classes, W students completed approximately 300 service hours at various locations throughout Columbus.

Since 2011, W students, faculty and staff have completed nearly one million community service hours, and the university has been named to the President’s Honor Roll for Higher Education Community Service four consecutive times.
