COLUMBUS, Miss. (Press Release) — Mississippi University for Women will give the academic community an opportunity to welcome and celebrate new faculty members as they present their area of research at the Provost New Faculty Symposium Monday April 14, at 6 p.m. in the Kossen Auditorium, Poindexter Hall.

“Apart from teaching and service, MUW faculty are engaged in ground-breaking research and extraordinary creative activity. This faculty research symposium is intended to showcase some of the exciting scholarly and creative work of our new faculty,” said Dr. Dan Heimmermann, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Seven faculty members who are in their first four years of employment at The W will introduce research in a 10-minute presentation and a question and answer period.

The presenters are as follows:

  • Dr. Angela Farmer, director of educational leadership and assistant professor of education, will present, “Who’s the Bully, a Global View of Corporal Punishment in Schools.”
  • Dr. Kristi Acker, assistant professor of nursing, plans to discuss, “End of Life Decision Making.”
  • Dr. Valentin Bogdan, assistant professor of music, will talk about, “Romanian Music and Politics: an Analysis of the Modern Romanian Composition School and of the Geo-Political Factors that Influenced Its Development.”
  • Dr. Kyle Dempsey, visiting assistant professor of psychology, will present, “Play for Grade.”
  • Dr. Shonda Phelon, instructor of nursing, will discuss, “Suicide Protocol in Primary Care.”
  • Dr. Philip Stockton, assistant professor of music education, will talk about,” The History of the Cambiata Concept and Its Impact on Music Education.”
  • Dr. Chad Murphy, assistant professor of health and kinesiology will present, “Faith-Based Colorectal Cancer Prevention.”

A light reception will follow the symposium, which is open to the public.
