Needs Know No Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- With the holiday season coming to an end, some people think the giving season is over as well.

That sometimes means organizations that rely on donations have to get creative the other 10 months of the year, and according to Service Center Manager, Katie Walker, they do just that.

“We have families you know they lose their house in a fire and so they come to us and were able to help them with food or clothing or you know they get into a new place and so we provide them with furniture if we have it,” said Walker.

When these tragedies strike, the Salvation Army wants to have funds available to help.

According to Walker, people tend to be more generous during the holiday season.

But she says “needs know no season”.

“If they’ve had a child or them self has gotten sick so they can’t work, we’re able to fill in the gaps with food,” said Walker.

When donations are slow coming in, that’s when Walker and her team get a little creative.

“We do a spring trivia night fundraiser to kind of raise some money,” said Walker. “So just different activities or events we try to hold throughout the year.”

Fortunately, the Starkville Salvation Army has strong community support, including local Chairman, Larry Moore.

Moore knows what it takes to get the help where it’s needed.

“You know we have to have money in order to keep the salvation going,” said Moore. “And just like trying to help people throughout the year like a light bill, some people can’t afford to pay the light bill if we can help them we will.”

When those disasters hit, Moore knows he can count on his co-workers at Southwire and the surrounding community to really step up.

“Just like storms, we have storms, we bring a truck in out at Walmart and try to help bring in donations and stuff like that so as a company we believe in giving back,” said Moore.
