BOONEVILLE, Miss.– At its regularly scheduled monthly meeting in April, Northeast Mississippi Community College’s 15-member Board of Trustees approved a $75 per semester tuition increase to go into effect this fall.
Recommended to the Board by school president Johnny L. Allen, Ed.D., the hike was the first for Northeast since 2010. Allen said while the move was necessary as it was the last time, he didn’t take his recommendation lightly.
“It’s never a positive thing when colleges have to pass more of the cost of attendance on to the students and their families,” Allen explained. “For the past few years the Legislature has asked our (community/junior college) system to continue to provide a quality educational experience to the majority of the college students in the state of Mississippi without increasing its support for those students and their educational endeavors.”
Northeast’s tuition per semester for a fulltime (12 hours minimum), Mississippi resident student went from $945 to $1050 in the fall of 2010. This year’s increase moves the same figure to $1,125.
According to Allen, his recommendation to the Board was based on information compiled by the school’s Fee Committee that showed costs to operate the college such as food, fuel and employee fringe benefits had steadily increased over time.
“It’s disappointing, but it’s where we are,” Allen said. “Our Board and the people we serve depend on us to manage our resources responsibly, and I commend our administration and staff for being diligent in their efforts to do that. This is a step we never like to take, but we feel as though at this time, we have no choice.”
An increase to other fees including out-of-state/country tuition, part-time student tuition and meal tickets was also recommended and approved by the Board. Out-of-state tuition went from $2,100 to $2,250 per full-time semester. Out-of-country tuition rose from $2,200 to $2,400. Per semester hour cost for part-time was bumped to $125 per semester hour for in-state students and $250 per semester hour for out-of-staters.
Northeast offers two resident and one commuter meal ticket plan. The resident 15-meal plan now costs $787 per semester as opposed to the $764 of last year. A 19-meal, which includes the weekend, increased to $964 per semester from last year’s $936. The Noon Meal Plan (commuter) includes lunch on weekdays and rose to $284 per semester from $275.
Northeast will host sessions of Orientation for first-time students Thursday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 18. Fall registration is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, August 6 and 7. Classes for the 2013 fall semester begin Thursday, August 8.
