New Alabama Legislature to Convene for Organization

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The newly elected Alabama Legislature convenes at noon in Montgomery for its organizational session.

Members say they expect Rep. Mike Hubbard of Auburn to be re-elected speaker of the House on Tuesday even though he is under indictment for ethics charges. And they say they expect Sen. Del Marsh of Anniston to be re-elected president pro tem of the Senate.

During the organizational session, the House and Senate will discuss their operating rules for the next four years, and the leadership will announce appointments to committees.

Marsh says he hopes to end the session Wednesday.

The Legislature will return to Montgomery on March 3 for a regular session that could last 15 weeks. That’s when lawmakers will take up the state budgets and other major issues.
