NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) — After weeks of preparation, New Albany’s downtown is getting a striking new transportation feature.

Crews began installing the new 120-foot arched bridge that will take the Tangelfoot Trail over Main Street.

The new bridge replaces the old railroad bridge that originally crossed Main. The new 14-ton bridge provides more clearance for trucks, which have struck the old bridge numerous times in the last 60 years.

And it will attract attention to the bike and walking trail, which already has become a major attraction since opening 20 months ago.

“The trail has been a tremendous asset for New Albany. The impact of it on tourism and quality of life has just been phenomenal,” explained New Albany Marketing Director Sean Johnson.

Paul Smithey Construction removed the old bridge.

Crews also will complete work on the Tanglefoot Plaza which is the start of the 44-mile old railroad route from New Albany to Houston.
