No Charges Against Player Biting Coach

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A Mississippi sheriff says he doesn’t plan to file criminal charges against a high school girls basketball coach accused of biting a player on the face during a game.

Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the girl’s family said they would not press charges if Leake Academy coach Doyle Wolverton resigned.

Leake Academy says Wolverton resigned Monday.

Wolverton did not immediately respond to a phone message left with his wife on Tuesday.

Waggoner says the assault happened after a bad play at an away game in Marion County on Nov. 12. His office got involved when a Leake County hospital reported the bite as an assault.

Waggoner says the bite broke the skin but was not a severe injury.
