Video: No Seat Belt Tickets For Pickup Bed Passengers
JACKSON (WCBI) – It appears you can once again ride in the back of a pickup truck without fear of being ticketed for a seat belt violation.
An Attorney General opinion issued August 11th says Mississippi’s new seat belt law does not cover passengers riding in the cargo area of a truck . Assistant Attorney General James Dale says his interpretation of the law is it only covers passengers in the compartment area of a vehicle where seat belts are installed. Dale says the intent of the law was to eliminate the phrase front seat and include everyone riding inside a car or truck. The ruling does not prevent a driver from being ticketed if the passengers in the cargo area are acting in a reckless manner. WCBI is among the media outlets who in July quoted an MHP spokesman as saying the seat belt law did cover passengers in the back of a truck.
