Updated: One Dead After Shooting Outside Trotter Convention Center In Downtown Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – One man is dead after a shooting outside the Trotter Convention Center in downtown Columbus.

City Spokesman Joe Dillon tells WCBI the facility was rented for the evening, and the shooting occurred as an estimated 500 people were leaving.

The 911 call for the shooting was about 12:22 AM on Thursday. An officer was on scene with the victim within 30 seconds of the shooting.

There were two or three arguments inside the party before people started leaving. It’s unclear whether those are related to the shooting.

Four officers were at or just outside the Trotter when the shooting happened, along with two paid security workers the organizer paid for.

Cordell DeShaun Lewis, 27, of Columbus was shot on the sidewalk of 5th Street North.

Lewis later died at Baptist Golden Triangle Hospital.

Investigators closed the street for several hours while they collected evidence.

Dillon says investigators are still trying to determine whether Lewis attended the party at the Trotter.

An arrest has not been made.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says an autopsy will be performed, most likely, on Monday.

The incident remains under investigation.

This is the first homicide of the year, in the city, where a civilian allegedly did the shooting/ is considered a suspect.
