PD, city & officer named in Federal suit

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- The Columbus Police Department is again facing a Federal lawsuit.

Court documents state it stems from a shooting last year at a Columbus night club.

Morkiter Jones is suing the city, CPD and Officer Jared Booth.

At the time, officers were responding to the scene of a shots fired call last November at the Premiere Lounge.

In the complaint filed in Federal Court, Jones states she was asleep in her vehicle waiting on friends to leave the bar.

An altercation ensued which led Officer Jared Booth to fire his weapon, shooting and fatally wounding 24 year old Raymond Davis.

This court document states Jones was struck by a stray bullet during the gunfire.

Jones received injuries to her right hand and abdomen area.

Jones is suing the three parties, claiming Officer Booth used excessive force, that the city didn’t properly train officers and negligence.

We’ve reached out to the city and City Attorney Jeff Turnage says they’re not releasing a statement at this time.

Booth remains suspended from the police force because of the Davis shooting.

The affidavit was filed in Federal Court on November 3rd.
