Pet Microchips 101

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – A microchip is what reunited a dog owner with her long lost pet in West Point on Tuesday.

Microchips come in handy when your pet goes missing.

Microchips don’t have GPS tracking, but it’s a good way to ensure you can find your lost pet.

It comes in handy if your pets get out of the house or fence, or gets picked up by someone and is taken to to the animal shelter.

Whatever the case may be, if your pet is chipped, it can help shelters and vets identify who the pet belongs to.

“There’s actually a way we can scan your dog with this little microchip reader and you’re name and stuff will come up and we’ll be able to contact you instead of, you know, if they lost their collar. A lot of people think just the collar with the rabies tag is going to do it, but a lot of dogs that get out and run off, they will probably lose their collars and the microchip is the only way because the microchip can’t come out. We actually inject it under the skin,” says Dr. Karen Emerson.

Emerson says micro-chipping is for all types of pets.

She says they’re inexpensive and you register the microchip online with all of yours and your pet’s information.

Emerson says be sure to update any information online if you move or get a new phone number, so if you’re pet does go missing you’ll be easy to get in touch with.
