The future of the Pecan Acres subdivision

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – What will the future hold for the Pecan Acres Subdivision?

It’s a question many residents are still wanting to know.

The Starkville Housing Authority is looking to move residents from their current location along Highway 12 to a new site just off of Highway 82 by Tally Ho Road.

“The housing has been given the initial approval from fair housing and HUD (Housing and Urban Development ),” said Chairmen of the Starkville Housing Authority Board Loren Bell. “As the seller and purchaser are looking at their contract making sure they have everything taken care of on their end, then they will provide that to architects and engineers. They’ll put together a plan, they’ll present it back to us, and then we will either approve or adjust those houses, or drawings, or the layout.”

Residents in Pecan Acres will receive an upgrade and move into the new housing units at no costs, and won’t see an increase in their rent.

“Just think about it, it’s everybody’s dream to be in a house,” said Bell. “These houses are well built, but they’re 60 plus years old.”

Bell said it’s their goal to create residents a better living environment with this project.

“There are ideas about entrances, and exits, and the number of entrances, and how you limit issues and create a more warm environment and loving environment versus something that looks more like what we’re trying to get away from,” Bell explained.

If everything comes to fruition, Bell believes the project could be a win-win for everyone involved.

“I fully expect to be hearing something from them in the next 60 or 90 days,” he expressed. “I’m anticipating that maybe if we get everything taken care of then maybe we can break ground in late fall or early spring.”

Developers are looking to turn the current location of Pecan Acres into commercial use.
