PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) —   The Pontotoc County chapter of Habitat for Humanity decided to make this Mother’s Day weekend real  special for some homeowners who needed repairs done on their homes.

Women volunteers grabbed nail guns and other tools to put a new roof on this Pontotoc county residence. It was one of three projects done by more than fifty volunteers who took part in Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Week.

Pontotoc Habitat Executive Director Danny Park says there are certain criteria that must be met.

“They have to live in Pontotoc County for a number of years. They have to be able to work with us,” he points out. “And then they have to pay us back the cost of the construction. Normally the labor is volunteered and that’s how were able to provide the houses at a substantial discount,” Park says.

Barbara Carter coordinated the Women’s event.

“We call together the women and we do this on the weekend of Mother’s Day. It’s a fun time. We get out we work. We show what women can do, ” Carter exclaims.

Normally the Pontotoc Chapter of Habitat for Humanity does new home builds. In fact there is a project in the pipeline, scheduled to get underway in the summer.

“We do not have a home under construction, ” Park notes. “We’re waiting on some government approvals for a subdivision. We have picked out the next family,” he says.

In the meantime the homeowners of these repair projects are very grateful.

“It would be really really expensive job and with the Habitat it’s just a blessing. It’s a gift from the Lord a blessing,” says Patsy Wilson who had her roof replaced.

Monique Easley helped the volunteers lay down new flooring at her home.

“If it we’re for them I probably wouldn’t be able to do this so it’s a blessing to truly say you have people who feel they want to come out and you to redo your home,” she happily exclaims.

And everyone was thankful for Lowes Home Improvement, which donated the flooring used at Easley’s home.
