Preparing for the worst

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Our area is no stranger to bad weather, particularly tornadoes.

Tuesday morning, the Lowndes County Emergency Management and Response Agencies held a large-scale drill at Propst Park.

These crews want to be ready to respond if disaster strikes.

This year’s drill was designed to demonstrate the county’s ability to respond to a Tornado incident with mass casualties.

The drill also provides the next best thing to real-life experience for area nursing students.

A main goal is to make sure all agencies know how to work together.

“It’s important because coordination,” Lowndes County EMA Director, Cindy Lawrence said. “We want to make sure all of our agents are coordinated and we know each agency. We know the resources that are available here in Lowndes County. If there is a tornado that actually touches down in Lowndes County we’ll have the assistance that we need here in Lowndes County.”

State and Volunteer Agencies, Health Care Facilities, Columbus Air Force Base and MUW were all a part of today’s drill.
