Karlo Lane, 33, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of robbery before Judge Lee S. Coleman in Lowndes County Circuit Court. Lane was sentenced to 15 years in prison with seven years suspended, leaving eight years to serve. The sentence will be followed by five years of post-release supervision. Lane was ordered to pay $500 in restitution to the victim, $1,000 to the Mississippi Crime Victim Compensation Fund and a $1,200 fine. Additionally, Lane must seek mandatory alcohol and drug treatment while incarcerated.

On March 2, 2015, Lane attacked a 64-year-old woman, striking her in the head and knocking her to the ground before fleeing with her purse. The victim was leaving a store located on Highway 45 North in Columbus.

“This defendant struck the victim in her head with his fist, knocking her to the ground, then stole her purse,” Attorney General Hood said. “Luckily the victim was able to identify this man and we appreciate the hard work on this case by the Columbus Police Department. I also thank Judge Coleman for the time he gave this man to serve behind bars for his actions.”

The case was investigated by the Columbus Police Department and Investigator Roger Wade of the Attorney General’s Public Integrity Division. Special Assistant Attorney General Marvin Sanders prosecuted the case following a recusal by the Lowndes County District Attorney’s Office.
