LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- One step at time, that’s how we handle life’s biggest challenges, and never has that been more true for LaShasta Taylor.

“My mother, Lucile Harris Metts was affected with colon cancer and she battled that battle for about 12 years and this past November, November 19th, she passed away from fighting that battle,” said Taylor.

March is national colon cancer awareness month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

On Saturday, Taylor along with the Blue4MrsLou organization hosted the city’s first ever Colon Cancer Walk to bring more awareness about the cancer.

Taylor says It was tough to seeing her mother battle the disease, but through it all, Taylor said  her mother still remained strong.

“If you didn’t know, you didn’t know because she gave so much encouragement to her city, to her community, her church here at Mt. Moriah, she was faithful to everyone she met, even in her sickness, she had a word to give someone else,” said Taylor.

Wanting to keep her mother’s legacy alive, blue and white balloons were on display during the colon cancer walk to help raise awareness about this disease.

The community came out in big numbers to show their support, including two time breast cancer survivor Janice Combest.

“Me and Mrs Lou were both cancer survivors, I know her personally, I know her personally and the type of person she is,” said Combest.

Combest said her and Mrs. Lou were close friends and were battling their cancers at the same time.

Combest said the two would also comfort one another during their battles.

“We shared things, we shared how our treatments went, how we were feeling, we talked about the Lord, we was just always there,” said Combest.

Saturday would’ve marked Mrs. Lou’s 66th birthday, and in her honor, 66 blue and white balloons were released into the sky.

“You know what the bible says all we need is one, so if at least one person was impacted by today’s walk then I feel comfortable knowing I’ve done my job,” said Combest.

The Blue4MrsLou organization is planning to make this an annual event.
