‘Roller coaster’ of a challenge comes to Overstreet Elementary

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Overstreet Elementary in Starkville tested their engineering skills in their roller coaster showcase.

Kids in the intellectually gifted classes took the last 6 weeks to draw up blue prints and build up the winding courses.

A fun time for both teachers and builders.

“Obviously, it’s very enjoyable. The kids get to exercise their creativity. They’re all given the same number of parts, but they all use them differently in their own creative ways, engineering different paths for the roller coasters to take,” said PEAK Instructor David Nicholson.

“I learned how to do teamwork and synergizing with my teammates, and I learned how to do debits and credits,” added student, Alex Jones.

Student Matthew Sorrells chimed in, “The engineering skills, the creativity, the teamwork skills that we worked on, our math skills like how to write a check and how to keep up with your balance.”
