LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-A rural mail carrier is shot while delivering mail and three people of interests are in custody.
But Lowndes County authorities can’t release details because the investigation has been turned over to federal postal inspectors, who still were looking into the assault at this hour.
The three unnamed suspects were picked up just before 3 this afternoon in connection with the shooting of the mail man at the Providence Place housing development just before noon.
He had just gotten out of his pickup truck at the subdivision’s centralized mail boxes when he was assaulted.
Investigators say robbery could have been a motive. The suspects originally were detained minutes after the shooting but released.
They then were picked up near Eveningside Apartments on 13th Street North after detectives gathered more evidence and witness statements.
The postal worker was shot in the upper left arm and chest and rushed to Baptist Golden Triangle Hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
The post office is now offering a a reward of up to $20,000 dollars for any information on the shooting.
