FULTON, Miss. (WCBI)- A group of community leaders in Itawamba county are trying to make life easier for residents by providing a bus transportation system.

The group, known as the “Transportation Committee,” is currently trying to find ways to fund the program. The system will pick up and transport people in and out of the county for a small fee.

Brian Quinn, the president of the committee, and several other leaders attended a board of supervisors meeting requesting the proposal.

The board will meet again on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

Quinn says,  “It’s important for the county to have affordable transportation for its residents. There are so many people that I hear about on a daily basis who have a doctors appointments, but it incovenices the family so much to try to take off work and take that family member to a doctors appointment or simple things like the pharmacy or grocery store so there’s an error of need that will really make our county better.” Says Quinn.

Quinn says, the program is very affordable. It will costs riders $3 to $5 dollars if they’re traveling within the city.

Elderly people in the county will benefit the most from the proposed program.

Darcy Strickland has been living in Itawamba for nearly 50 years.

She drives, but her husband does not and says everyday is a hassle. She’s hoping the public transportation proposal goes through.

“I think it’s the most important thing they’ve come up with in a long time and as soon as they get it going the better off we’ll be” says Strickland.
