WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – The streets of downtown West Point were crowded with runners Saturday afternoon for the 4th annual Spring into Action 5k run, as parents and kids came out to support child abuse prevention.

As part of April’s child abuse prevention month, Sally Kate Winters Family Services in West Point had their 4th annual 5k run.

“This is just an awareness event that we like to provide to the community to let everybody know that child abuse is real and it is in our community and we all need to be involved in order to help the children who are being victimized by that,” said Sheila Brand, Executive Director.

Fourteen thousand dollars was raised just in sponsorship for the event and all proceeds will help expand the services the organization offers to children for the next year.

“We did a balloon release to kind of have a moment of silence for the victims and sufferers of child abuse. I think that moment of silence really gives people participating who are here and who are running in it a pause to consider why we’re here,” added Heather Usry, Outreach Coordinator for the event.

Third place winner Joe Mactown and his son say they always come out to support these types of causes.

“It feels really good. I like sporting in any of these types of causes. We do a lot of them, its great. I’m getting used to him beating me as he gets older and older. It feels good to be third,” said Joe Mactown.

The event this year also included jumpers, a smaller fun-run for the kids, and entertainment by different community children groups.
