Salute For Service Program recognizes senator, elder

Doctor Martin Luther King’s legacy is honored in Monroe County today.

Senator Hob Bryan and Elder John Barrentine were recognized today at the “M-L-K” 50, Salute For Service Program.

The event was held at Saint Paul’s Church in the Athens Community.

Pastor James Cook says the event looks to strengthen the bond between the races.

“We need to do something that would bring our town together, to be able to show that they are worthy, white and black so these two individuals were chosen today because they epitomize the essence and the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King,” says Cook.

Memphis Police Officer, Chris Street, spoke at the ceremony on his life and the changes he’s seen in race relations.
