School remembers teen killed in crash

CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- A West Point High School student is killed in crash late Tuesday evening.

The crash happened on MS-50 near Pate Road.

Troopers say a 2007 white Dodge Nitro, driven by Robert Fisher Jr. 66, of West Point, MS was traveling west when he collided with a gray 2005 Nissan 350Z, traveling east driven by Jonathan Dean Fondren, 16.

Fondren was pronounced dead on scene.

After the heartbreaking news, students and the school district are leaning on each other as they grieve.

Principal Kendall Pickens says they have brought in counselors district wide, and called on local pastors to help students in need.

The school has also provided rooms where students can go and grieve in peace if need be.

“We have brought in the students who were teammates of John and we’re just trying to make sure the kids are coping well. We understand that it is a difficult time and we’re just trying to be here for the kids and be here for the families. You know just love and just support each other,” said Pickens.

Teachers have been prepped on how to handle situations that might occur in the classroom as well.

MHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
