Sen. Burton gives speech addressing his reason for stepping down

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI)- A shocking announcement from a Mississippi Senator during the first day of the legislative session.

Senator Burton announces he’s stepping down as the Senates President Pro Tempore.

Senator Burton addressed the rest of the state senators and also announced he will not be running for re-election this year.

In December, Burton faced his 2nd DUI charge in Okitbbeha County.

During Burton’s speech today he apologized for his behavior and told his colleagues he hoped his actions didn’t reflect badly on them.

“During these next few months, as we finish out this term, I’m turning it over to God and the professionals I’m working with to deal with my personal issues, demons, human frailties, whatever you want to call them,” said Sen. Burton.

Burton represents District 31.

His resignation as president pro tempore is effective at midnight.
